The owner here wanted it all!

A complete Tiki package/environment with a two-week build time and a meagre budget. We pre-built and pre-bought as much decor as possible. All the bamboo benches were custom designed for the space and ordered from the Philippines. Tikis were sculpted from flameproof theatre-grade polystyrene and coated in an inert tuff acrylic concrete before being carefully aged. Lighting units were made up to resemble canoes, and thrift stores were raided for suitable paraphernalia.

The bar, previously the Cock Tavern (400 people approx), was a great space with a central bar and several easily distinguishable spaces which we emphasised with different décor: a water garden eating area; a witch doctor’s hut for the dance floor; a tropical cabana lounge area with beach ”views”.

One immediate difficulty was the Tavern was the garish bright turquoise and orange paint job, so the first couple of days were spent stripping paint off back to wood and covering every available surface in brown paint and bamboo sheeting. Due to the size of the place vs. budget, Tiki masks were mass manufactured from recycled planks, and a lot of vacuum formed masks were made up from clay sculpts to form all the elevated decoration. Tropically themed photo murals were used throughout to provide vistas.

The owner was over the moon with the final outcome and bar a few additions the original décor has been maintained. The bar has been there for 8 years now and still attracts a strong client base from all over London.

South London Pacific is a hyper-kitsch sensory rollercoaster with not a trace of the irony that underpins so many other similar venues in London.

By no stretch of the imagination does the Hawaiian theme stop with an umbrella in a pina colada. In fact, if your natural habitat is more like Antarctica (expensive to go to, boring and very white) the place might prove a little much.

The variety of nights ranges from Elvis impersonators to Burlesque dancers, Hula shows to 1950s discos. Most of all it's just a pleasure to behold regardless of the season our own little island decides to bestow on us.
